In truth, he's dead because of a government experiment gone wrong that involved an aggression drug known as "the Ladder". He's been unable to accept this, and according to Meister Eckhart, the Angels guiding him will appear as demons...

Trivia: "Jacob's Ladder" came from the Book of Genesis as a way to heaven dreamed up by a patriarch of the same name.
